Hartford faces significant housing affordability challenges, with a substantial portion of residents burdened by housing costs. According to the Greater Hartford Gives Foundation’s 2026 Equity Report, 53% of Hartford residents spend 30% or more of their income on housing, compared to 32% across the broader service area. This issue disproportionately affects renters and communities of color, with 44% of renter households being cost-burdened.
Homeownership rates also reflect these disparities. In Hartford, only 26% of households own their homes, with Latino and Black households owning at rates of 35% and 44%, respectively, compared to 77% for white households. The typical home value in Connecticut increased by 32% between December 2019 and December 2025, exacerbating affordability issues.
Community organizations and local government are actively seeking solutions. Initiatives include increasing access to affordable housing, providing financial literacy programs, and advocating for policies that promote equitable housing opportunities. Residents are encouraged to participate in community forums and collaborate with local organizations to address these challenges collectively.
